When you want to take a more proactive approach to your cardiovascular health, you may come across both ECP/EECP® therapy and cardiac rehabilitation. Although both can play a role in heart care, they are different services with different purposes.
Cardiac rehabilitation is generally a medically supervised recovery program for people who have experienced certain heart conditions, events, or procedures. ECP/EECP®is a noninvasive therapy performed while the patient rests and may be used in specific clinical circumstances or incorporated into a preventive cardiovascular wellness plan after an appropriate evaluation.
CoCardio® is not a cardiac rehabilitation program. We offer a preventive-forward, cash-pay experience for people who want to understand their cardiovascular health better and complement the care they already receive from their physicians.
Before recommending ECP/EECP®, we take time to understand the whole person. Our process helps us determine whether ECP/EECP® is appropriate, how it may fit into the individual’s broader care, and what other areas of cardiovascular wellness may need attention.
Important: New, severe, or worsening chest pain may be a medical emergency. Call 911 or seek immediate medical care rather than using this article to evaluate urgent symptoms.
ECP vs. Cardiac Rehabilitation: The Quick Answer
Cardiac rehabilitation is a structured medical program that commonly includes supervised exercise, education, and recovery support after a qualifying cardiac event, procedure, or diagnosis.
ECP/EECP® is a noninvasive therapy performed while the patient rests on a treatment table. At CoCardio®, ECP/EECP®may be incorporated into a personalized cardiovascular plan for appropriately evaluated individuals who want a proactive experience that complements their current care.
CoCardio® is not a cardiac rehabilitation facility. Our consultations, ECP/EECP® sessions, and preventive cardiovascular wellness services are cash pay and are not billed to insurance. We accept eligible HSA and FSA payments.

ECP/EECP® and cardiac rehabilitation are complementary. Rather than choosing one over the other, many people benefit most when the two work together, because each supports the heart differently. Cardiac rehabilitation focuses on supervised exercise, education, and recovery, while ECP/EECP® is performed while you rest. When appropriate and coordinated with your medical team, the two can be part of one complete cardiovascular plan.
What Is Cardiac Rehabilitation?
Cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised program designed to support recovery and improve long-term cardiovascular health after certain heart-related events, procedures, or diagnoses.
A cardiac rehabilitation program may include:
- Supervised exercise
- Heart-rate and blood-pressure monitoring
- Nutrition education
- Medication education
- Cardiovascular risk-factor management
- Stress-management support
- Guidance for safely returning to daily activities
Cardiac rehabilitation may be recommended after a heart attack, coronary intervention, bypass surgery, valve surgery, or for certain individuals with coronary artery disease, heart failure, or stable angina.
Eligibility and insurance coverage depend on the person’s diagnosis, medical history, physician recommendation, and health plan.
What Is ECP/EECP® Therapy?
ECP/EECP® stands for external counterpulsation.ECP/EECP® stands for enhanced external counterpulsation. Both terms describe forms of noninvasive counterpulsation therapy, although terminology and cleared medical uses may differ depending on the specific device.
During treatment, inflatable cuffs are placed around the lower body. The cuffs inflate and deflate in coordination with the patient’s heartbeat while the patient rests on a treatment table.
ECP/EECP® does not involve incisions, anesthesia, or a hospital stay. However, it is still an active cardiovascular intervention involving substantial cuff pressure and coordination with the cardiac cycle. For that reason, an appropriate consultation and screening process should come before treatment.
Watch Dr. Brian Asbill explain how Enhanced External Counterpulsation (ECP) uses gentle pressure cuffs to support circulation and blood flow to the heart. Learn how ECP may play a role in a personalized approach to cardiovascular health.

What Does an ECP Session Feel Like?
During an ECP/EECP® session, the patient lies on a treatment table while the cuffs apply rhythmic pressure to the lower body. Some patients read, listen to music, work quietly, or rest during their session.
Many patients tolerate the treatment well and can return to their usual activities afterward. However, the pressure is noticeable, and some patients may experience temporary discomfort, bruising, skin irritation, fatigue, numbness, or muscle soreness.
The number and frequency of sessions depend on the reason for treatment, the individual’s goals, their response, and the plan developed by the clinical team.
Why Do We Require a Consultation Before ECP/EECP®?
People often ask why they cannot simply walk in and begin ECP/EECP®. The reason is not to make the process more complicated. It is to make the experience more thoughtful, appropriate, and personalized.
Two people may arrive with the same goal, such as improving their cardiovascular wellness, but have very different health histories. One person may be ready to proceed after screening. Another may have a blood-pressure concern, heart-rhythm issue, vascular condition, clotting concern, recent procedure, medication consideration, or symptom that needs to be reviewed before treatment.
A person may also come in asking for ECP/EECP® when another need should be addressed first. For example, someone experiencing new chest discomfort may need timely medical evaluation rather than a preventive wellness session. Another person may benefit from ECP/EECP®, but also need a plan for movement, nutrition, stress, sleep, or coordination with their existing physician.
Our process is designed to help us answer three important questions:
- Is ECP appropriate for this individual?
- Can it be provided safely within the person’s current health situation?
- How should it fit into a broader cardiovascular wellness plan?
Screening does not mean that something is wrong with you. It means we take your health seriously enough not to provide a one-size-fits-all treatment without understanding the person receiving it.
Uncontrolled blood pressure, rhythm problems that interfere with treatment timing, severe peripheral vascular concerns, blood-clotting issues, and recent cardiac events or procedures are examples of factors that may require additional consideration. Screening standards depend on the device, medical circumstances, and treating team.
What Could the Screening Process Uncover?
Consider two people who both feel generally healthy and want to try ECP/EECP® as part of a preventive wellness plan.
The first person has stable vital signs, no concerning symptoms, and a health history that allows the team to move forward with an appropriate plan.
The second person mentions during the consultation that they have recently developed an irregular heartbeat, leg swelling, or unexplained chest discomfort. Even though they originally came in for wellness, that information may change the safest next step. The team may recommend obtaining additional medical guidance before beginning ECP/EECP®.
Without a consultation, those differences may be missed. That is why CoCardio® does not treat ECP/EECP® as a walk-in spa service. It is a cardiovascular therapy delivered within a professional process.
What Is the Healthy Heart Blueprint?
The consultation is not only about deciding “yes” or “no” to ECP/EECP®. It allows the CoCardio® team to develop a Healthy Heart Blueprint based on the individual’s health history, current concerns, existing medical care, lifestyle, and long-term goals.
The Healthy Heart Blueprint gives the individual a clearer understanding of:
- What they are hoping to improve
- Which cardiovascular concerns deserve attention
- Whether ECP/EECP® may have an appropriate role
- What information or medical records may be helpful
- Which daily habits may support their goals
- How CoCardio®’s services can complement their existing care
- What level of commitment and follow-through may be required
The purpose is not to add unnecessary appointments before treatment. It is to avoid offering an isolated service without understanding what the person is trying to accomplish.
ECP/EECP® may be one part of the blueprint, but it is not automatically the entire plan. Depending on the individual, the broader approach may also address nutrition, movement, stress, sleep, cardiovascular risk awareness, and communication with existing medical professionals.
How CoCardio® Uses ECP/EECP® in a Preventive-Forward Setting
CoCardio® is designed for people who do not want to wait for a major health event before becoming more engaged in their cardiovascular wellness.
Our preventive-forward approach gives individuals the time and structure to understand their health, clarify their goals, and explore services that may complement the care they already receive.
Following an appropriate consultation and screening process, ECP/EECP® may be incorporated into a personalized plan that considers:
- Health history
- Current medical care
- Cardiovascular concerns
- Personal wellness goals
- Lifestyle habits
- Ability to participate consistently
- Whether ECP/EECP® is an appropriate part of the overall plan
The CoCardio® experience may also include education and guidance related to:
- Cardiovascular risk awareness
- Nutrition
- Appropriate movement
- Stress management
- Circulation-focused wellness
- Sustainable health habits
This experience is designed to complement established care. It does not replace a cardiologist, primary care physician, cardiac rehabilitation program, prescribed medication, diagnostic testing, emergency care, or a recommended procedure.
ECP/EECP® May Be Discussed in Different Care Contexts
ECP/EECP® may be discussed in a clinical context for certain appropriately evaluated patients, including selected individuals with chronic stable angina.
CoCardio® may also incorporate ECP/EECP® into a preventive cardiovascular wellness experience for appropriately screened individuals who want to take a more proactive and personalized approach to their health.
These contexts must not be blended into one broad medical claim. Preventive wellness participation should not be described as treatment for a diagnosed condition unless the individual has received the appropriate diagnosis and recommendation.
How Do We Decide Whether ECP/EECP® Fits Your Plan?
There is no single checklist that determines whether ECP/EECP® is right for every person.
The decision may depend on:
- Health history
- Current symptoms
- Blood pressure
- Heart rhythm
- Vascular health
- Medications
- Recent procedures or medical changes
- Existing medical recommendations
- Personal wellness goals
- The specific ECP/EECP® device and intended use
In a medical context, ECP/EECP® may be considered for selected patients whose circumstances fit the relevant clinical and device criteria.
In a preventive wellness context, someone may be interested in ECP/EECP® because they want a structured and proactive cardiovascular experience. Interest is a reason to schedule a consultation, but it is not a reason to bypass screening.
The CoCardio® team does not begin with the assumption that everyone needs ECP/EECP®. We begin by understanding the individual and then determine whether ECP/EECP® belongs in the Healthy Heart Blueprint.
Why CoCardio® Does Not Offer Walk-In ECP/EECP®
CoCardio® does not operate as a walk-in ECP/EECP® facility because our goal is not simply to complete a treatment session. Our goal is to understand why the person is seeking ECP/EECP®, whether it fits their current health situation, and what meaningful outcome they hope to achieve.
Beginning treatment without that context may save time on the first day, but it can create confusion later. A structured process gives both the patient and the team clear expectations from the beginning.
We value efficiency, but we do not rush decisions involving cardiovascular health. The consultation and Healthy Heart Blueprint help us provide a more intentional experience rather than a generic series of sessions.
Who Is a Good Fit for CoCardio®?
CoCardio® is a strong fit for people who care about their health and are ready to take an active role in meaningful change.
Our patients are often looking for more than a single procedure. They want to better understand their cardiovascular wellness, make informed decisions, and follow a thoughtful plan that complements the medical care they already receive.
You may be a good fit for CoCardio® if you:
- Want to take a preventive and proactive approach
- Value personalized attention and education
- Are open about your health history and current care
- Understand that ECP/EECP® may be one part of a broader plan
- Are willing to follow through with the recommended process
- Want sustainable improvement rather than an instant promise
- Respect the role of your existing physicians and medical team
CoCardio® may not be the right fit if you are only seeking immediate approval for a treatment you have already selected, are unwilling to complete the screening process, or want our services to replace medical advice or treatment recommended elsewhere.
We welcome questions and second opinions. However, it is not the appropriate practice for someone seeking multiple opinions solely to obtain a predetermined answer. Our recommendations are based on what the team believes is appropriate after reviewing the individual’s health, goals, and current care.
Can ECP/EECP® and Cardiac Rehabilitation Be Used Together?
In some situations, ECP/EECP® and cardiac rehabilitation may both be included in a broader cardiovascular plan because they serve different purposes.
Cardiac rehabilitation emphasizes supervised exercise, recovery, education, and long-term risk reduction. ECP/EECP® is performed while the patient rests and may be considered for selected clinical needs or incorporated into a preventive wellness plan after appropriate evaluation.
Anyone currently participating in cardiac rehabilitation should speak with their rehabilitation and cardiology teams before beginning ECP/EECP®. CoCardio®’s services are intended to complement coordinated care, not create a separate or conflicting treatment plan.
Cost, Insurance, HSA, and FSA
CoCardio® is a cash-pay practice. We do not bill insurance for consultations, ECP/EECP®sessions, or preventive cardiovascular wellness services.
We accept eligible HSA and FSA payments. Because individual plans and eligible expenses can vary, patients should confirm their specific HSA or FSA requirements with their plan administrator.
Traditional cardiac rehabilitation may be covered by insurance for qualifying patients when medical and plan requirements are met. Medicare coverage for ECP is limited to specific severe stable-angina circumstances and should not be confused with CoCardio®’s cash-pay preventive wellness services.
CoCardio®’s payment model allows us to provide a more personalized and preventive-forward experience outside the limitations of insurance billing. All costs should be explained clearly before the patient commits to a service or program.

Understanding Your Options
ECP/EECP® and cardiac rehabilitation are different services that may support cardiovascular health in different ways.
Cardiac rehabilitation is generally a medically supervised recovery and risk-reduction program for individuals who meet specific clinical criteria. ECP/EECP® is a noninvasive therapy that may be considered in selected medical situations and may also be incorporated into CoCardio®’s preventive-forward cardiovascular wellness experience after an appropriate evaluation.
CoCardio® is not a cardiac rehabilitation facility or a walk-in ECP/EECP® center. We provide a thoughtful, personalized process for people who want to complement their current care and take a more proactive role in their cardiovascular wellness.
The consultation and Healthy Heart Blueprint help us determine whether ECP/EECP® fits the individual rather than placing every person into the same treatment program.
The right next step depends on your health history, current care, concerns, goals, and readiness to participate in a meaningful plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I simply walk in and begin ECP/EECP®?
ECP/EECP® involves coordinated pressure around the lower body and is timed to the cardiovascular cycle. A consultation allows us to review your health history, current symptoms, medications, goals, and other factors that may affect whether treatment is appropriate. The process is not intended to waste your time. It helps us determine whether ECP/EECP® fits your needs and whether another step should come first.
What happens during the ECP/EECP® screening process?
The CoCardio® team reviews your health history, current care, cardiovascular concerns, medications, wellness goals, and relevant risk factors. Depending on your situation, additional information or medical guidance may be requested before treatment begins.
What is the Healthy Heart Blueprint?
The Healthy Heart Blueprint is a personalized plan developed from your consultation. It helps identify your goals, areas of concern, possible next steps, and whether ECP/EECP® should be incorporated into your preventive cardiovascular wellness plan.
Does everyone who schedules a consultation receive ECP/EECP®?
The consultation is designed to determine whether ECP/EECP® is an appropriate part of your plan. In some cases, the team may recommend obtaining additional information, consulting another medical professional, or addressing another need before beginning treatment. Some patients may not qualify for receiving ECP Treatment. This is determined by our medical team.
Is ECP/EECP® the same as cardiac rehabilitation?
Cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised program that commonly includes exercise, education, and recovery support after certain cardiac events, procedures, or diagnoses. ECP/EECP® is a noninvasive therapy performed while the patient rests.
Is CoCardio® a cardiac rehabilitation program?
CoCardio® is a preventive cardiovascular wellness practice. We provide consultations, Healthy Heart Blueprints, ECP/EECP® services, and personalized wellness support, but we do not operate a traditional hospital-based cardiac rehabilitation program.
Can ECP/EECP® complement my existing medical care?
It may, depending on your health history and individual needs. CoCardio®’s services are designed to complement, not replace, care from your cardiologist, primary care physician, rehabilitation team, or other medical professionals.
Can someone use ECP/EECP® for preventive wellness?
CoCardio® may incorporate ECP/EECP® into a preventive cardiovascular wellness plan following an appropriate consultation and screening process. Preventive use should not be described as treatment for a diagnosed condition or as a guarantee that cardiovascular disease will be prevented.
Can I participate in ECP/EECP® while attending cardiac rehabilitation?
Possibly, but the decision should be coordinated with your cardiologist and cardiac rehabilitation team. Because the services serve different purposes, some people may use both within a broader plan.
Does CoCardio® accept insurance?
CoCardio® is a cash-pay practice and does not bill insurance for consultations, ECP/EECP® sessions, or preventive cardiovascular wellness services.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
CoCardio® accepts eligible HSA and FSA payments. Patients should confirm their individual plan requirements and eligible expenses with their HSA or FSA administrator.
Does ECP/EECP® replace medication or a recommended procedure?
ECP/EECP® does not replace prescribed medication, emergency treatment, cardiac rehabilitation, surgery, or another procedure recommended by a qualified medical professional. Never stop or change treatment without speaking with your medical team.
What type of person is a good fit for CoCardio®?
CoCardio® is designed for people who care about their long-term health, value a personalized process, and are ready to participate in meaningful cardiovascular wellness changes. It may not be the right fit for someone seeking immediate approval for a predetermined treatment without completing the consultation and screening process.
